Looking at the Moon

Crunching through the fallen leaves.

Joy doesn’t kill Sorrow
Joy lives with Sorrow
They never say,
“Cheer up!” or
“It’s not so bad!”
They intertwine their fingers with Sorrow’s and pour warm water down their back
Joy doesn’t tiptoe around Sorrow
Because they know that holding space doesn’t mean taking up less
Sorrow never forces a smile around Joy because they know that performing it is not really a kindness
But sometimes Joy and Sorrow find things that they both like to do:
Crunching through the fallen leaves
Looking at the moon

Portrait of a 30-something year old woman with short brown hair in the glow of a white candlestick burning in the foreground

The green room had no ambience. But there was a single, untouched candle. Its pewter candleholder, in the shape of two angels.
